Living in Russia

Russia is the world’s largest country, straddling Europe and Asia. Its formal medical education dates to 1758, when the medical faculty that later became Sechenov University was founded in Moscow. The sector is regulated by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. As of 2024, more than 31,000 Indians were studying in Russia — around 21,500 of them in medical education (Sberbank India, citing consulate data), while the Indian Embassy in Moscow cites “more than 20,000 Indian students currently studying MBBS.”

Advantages of Studying in Russia

  • Government universities with a long track record of teaching Indians
  • Early, extensive clinical exposure in affiliated hospitals
  • Curriculum aligned to international standards
  • Lower cost of living than Western Europe
  • Safe, secured campuses

Cost of MBBS — Breakdown

Total 6-year cost typically ranges ₹18–40 lakh depending on university and city, covering tuition, hostel and living expenses. Moscow and Kazan sit at the upper end; regional Siberian and Volga universities are cheaper.

Food & Accommodation

Most universities provide separate hostels for boys and girls (2–4 sharing) with central heating, Wi-Fi and shared kitchens. Indian messes serving vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are common in cities with large Indian communities. Monthly living cost is roughly $150–$300.

Travel Cost

A one-way India–Russia flight generally costs ₹25,000–₹45,000 depending on city, season and connections. Students usually travel in groups for the September intake.

Course Duration

6 years total (5 years academic + 1 year internship), satisfying the NMC requirement of at least 54 months of instruction plus a 12-month internship.

Medium of Teaching

English for international students in the pre-clinical years; Russian is taught alongside so students can communicate with patients during clinical rotations.

Intake Schedule

Main intake is September/October; some universities run a February intake. Applications typically open April–June.

Admission Procedure (Step by Step)

  1. Shortlist a WDOMS-listed, NMC-compliant university
  2. Submit application with scanned documents
  3. Receive invitation/admission letter (usually 2–4 weeks)
  4. Pay first-year tuition as per university norms
  5. Apply for a student visa at the Russian consulate
  6. Obtain the NMC Eligibility Certificate (using NEET proof)
  7. Travel to Russia for the September intake

Scholarships Available

Russia awards 200 fully-funded scholarships to Indians each year (Russian House Vice Consul Alexander Dodonov, May 2025). Some universities also offer merit-based tuition discounts. Because places are limited and highly competitive, most Indian students self-fund or use education loans — plan finances accordingly.

Medical Courses Offered

  • UG: General Medicine (MBBS-equivalent), Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pediatrics
  • PG: Residency/Ordinatura, PhD/Aspirantura, specialised programmes

Career Opportunities After MBBS

  • Practise in India after clearing FMGE/NExT and a 12-month CRMI internship. (For context, Russia’s overall FMGE 2024 pass rate was 29.54%, per NBEMS data cited by PrepLadder/Careers360 — choose your university partly on its FMGE track record.)
  • USMLE pathway (USA) via ECFMG certification
  • PLAB pathway (UK)
  • PG/residency in Russia, Europe or elsewhere

Campus Life

Indian student associations celebrate Diwali, Holi and other festivals; universities host sports, cultural events and student clubs. Cold winters (especially in Siberia and the north) are the main adjustment for Indian students.
