Stavropol State Medical University (SSMU) traces its origins to a 26 May 1937 resolution of the USSR Council of People’s Commissars establishing the Stavropol Medical Institute; classes began on 19 September 1938 with 166 first-year students, initially taught in rented buildings before the institute acquired its own premises in 1939.
During the Second World War, the evacuated Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute was absorbed into SSMU and the course was shortened to 3.5 years to meet wartime medical staffing needs — the first wartime graduating class qualified on 1 August 1942. The institute suffered occupation damage between August 1942 and January 1943, including the loss of 68 staff and family members, but resumed operations on 8 February 1943.
Renamed Stavropol State Medical Academy in 1994, it regained full university status in 2013 by decree of Russia’s Ministry of Health. Today SSMU runs 72 departments with over 50 doctors of science, 274 candidates of science, and more than 180 qualified faculty members, including 20 members of international academies and 28 recipients of the “Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation” title.
