Northern State Medical University (NSMU) is located in Arkhangelsk, in Russia’s far north, and traces its roots to a resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars in October 1931 ordering a medical institute be established for the region’s timber and shipping workforce. The institute opened on 4 August 1932 in a former Arkhangelsk City Duma building, was renamed Northern State Medical Academy in 1994, and was granted full university status in 2000 — making it the only medical university in Russia’s northernmost region.
