The Faculty of Medicine at Trakia University traces its origins to 1982, when it was established as a Higher Medical Institute for training in the specialty of Medicine under the Medical Academy. In 1995, it gained independent status as part of the newly formed Trakia University, created through the merger of the Higher Institute of Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine with the Higher Institute of Medicine in Stara Zagora.
