Medical University of Plovdiv traces its roots to 1945, when it began as the Faculty of Medicine at Plovdiv University. It became the independent Medical Academy of Plovdiv in 1950, was renamed the Higher Medical Institute in 1972, and took its current name, Medical University of Plovdiv, in 2002 following a decision by the Bulgarian National Assembly. The university comprises the Faculties of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, and Public Health, along with a Medical College and a teaching hospital with around 2,000 beds. Over 5,000 students study at the university, with more than 3,800 trained annually, and its English-medium General Medicine programme is recognised by the WHO and listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), making it a well-established choice for international and Indian students.
