Astana Medical University was founded on 26 October 1964 by order of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR, initially opening as the Tselinograd State Medical Institute with its first classes beginning on 12 December 1964. The institute was reorganised into an academy in 1997 and formally recognised as a university in January 2009, becoming the first joint-stock company among Kazakhstan’s medical universities. Located in Astana, the capital, the university has been under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Healthcare since July 2010 and hosts over 5,000 students across seven faculties, including international medicine, dentistry, public health, nursing, and pharmacy, supported by 873 qualified teachers. Its English-medium General Medicine programme is recognised by the WHO and listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
